The walls, ceiling and floor are the background areas of a room. The walls may have windows, doors, bulit-in cupboards, or other architectural features. This background area may be compared to the scenery on a stage that it provides the setting for the furnishings of the room.
Inconspicuous colors and patterns are best suited for the background so that these large areas do not dominate the furnishings. Many materials are used for background finishes. Some are a part of the structure of the house which may be wood, plaster, tile and others applied like paint and wallpaper. When you live in a home that you own, it may be easier to have a suitable background than when you live in rented quarters. Sometimes the background is confused and cluttered with too much pattern and color or it may be monotonous and colorless. Of the two extremes, the latter is easier to improve since it is possible to add pattern and color through furnishings.
